PHARMACOGNOSY-

SANDAL WOOD OIL
SYNONYM:
                        East Indian sandal wood oil

BIOLOGICAL SOURCE:
Obtained from the heart-wood of santalum album

FAMILY:  santalaceae

DESCRIPTION:
Colour-pale yellow to colourless viscid liquid
Odour-charecterstic,persistant
Taste-unpleasant
Solubility-very slightly solubile in water,soluble in alcohol and chloroform.

CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS:
        Oil of sandal contains95%of two isomeric sesquiterpene alcohols,
        Alpha santalol and beta santalol
Additionally contains-aldehyde santalal,santene,teresantolo,santalone and santalene.

USES:
                Sandal wood oil is used for symptomatic treatment of dysurea,
               
Asa Perfume in preparation of cosmetics and incense sticks.

In diminishing the frequency of micturition marked in the tuberculosis of bladder

 SUBSTITUTES:
Eucarya spicata- Australian sandal wood oil, contains sesqueterpene alcohols known as fusanols.
                       
Amyris balsamifera-west Indian sandal wood oil,
contains 50% amyrol
